Love and well-being to us all!
Good work Team 2020!
Thanks to your generous contributions and donations, we have raised over $10,000 to support the cost of the GaL-AA dance and hospitality suite at the 2020 Convention. As trusted servants to both the LGBT+ recovery community with accountability to GaL-AA Executive Committee, we will be returning all of the unused funds to GaL-AA’s general fund. These funds will be used to sustain the international outreach and community-building work GaL-AA does throughout the year. Some funds may also be set aside to assist with GaL-AA’s local committee once they begin preparing for the 2025 Convention in Vancouver, BC. You can learn more about the work of GaL-AA by visiting their website gal-aa.org.
I am both humbled and privileged to have served with my amazing ‘friends of Bill’ on Detroit’s local committee. A native Detroiter, I sobered up in East Lansing during college and regularly attended Lansing’s only LGBT+ group, the Back Porch Group, in the early 80s, before relocating back to the Detroit area during the HIV crises. I’m saddened that I will not have the honor of hosting all y’all in my hometown. Yet, I’m grateful that we’ll continue to trudge the road of happy destiny until we meet again in Vancouver. Let us remember that Love and Tolerance of Others is our code. May God Bless us all as we continue to stay sober together.
One. Day. At. A. Time.
The Alcoholics Anonymous international convention scheduled for July 4th weekend, 2020, has been cancelled due to the COVID-19 coronavirus. Since March 2017, our local GAL-AA committee has been working on planning the LGBT+ dance and hospitality suite for the convention. We sincerely regret that these activities will not occur, and hope that you consider visiting Detroit’s nationally recognized arts and cultural institutions, restaurants, music and sports venues, and your friends in our vibrant recovery community at a later date.
This is not what we all expected when we embarked on this endeavor together. Obviously, it is the right choice at this time. I am grateful that I have had a chance to work with you all, get to know you better, and grow in my recovery. Thank you all for your hard work, and I’m looking forward to when we can see each other in person again. Even though we won’t be putting on our events and hosting out of town guests, I feel proud that our diligent fundraising efforts will help to make an impact on recovery efforts for people who are truly in need of support. We should all be very proud.
It is with sadness in my heart that the AA international convention will not be held this year in Detroit
As like all of you I was truly looking forward to it.
It is an amazing experience to attend a International Convention every 5 years and all of us to get together and celebrate this organization that has given us a new lease on life that is alcohol free as we live our sober lives and become productive members of society
Its been a real joy to work with GaL-AA and the Detroit 2020 committees to try and bring the ideas to fruition for this International Convention, I will continue to support AA, GaL-AA and our local groups with service work.
See you in 2025
